Updating jailbroken iphone 3g to 2 2

Be sure to follow our Jailbreak series to get the most out of jailbreaking your i Phone. In the process of jailbreaking the i Phone OS, a partition inside the i Phone OS is created specially to store the files and data necessary for jailbreaking to work. If you look at the storage bar of your device in its i Tunes page, you’ll see this 500MB partition marked as “Others”, since, naturally, i Tunes does not recognize this third-party addition. Your i Phone life is about to improve in so many ways. When it has rebooted, try to restore or update your device. This is a complete tutorial which will show you how to jailbreak i OS 4.2.1, 4.2, 4.1 on i Phone 4, 3GS, 3G, i Pod Touch 4G, 3G, 2G and i Pad using Red Sn0w.

Update #3: You can jailbreak i OS 4.2.1 untethered using Red Sn0w 0.9.7b4.

If you wish to upgrade the firmware of your i Phone, always restore to the default firmware first. Jailbreaking frees your i Phone to run applications and code that are not signed by Apple, while unlocking frees the device from the carrier that it is bound to as part of the service contract you’ve signed with your carrier of choice.

After you’ve done so, you can safely click that ‘Upgrade’ button in i Tunes. So, the fact is, yes, you have to jailbreak before you can unlock your i Phone, but unlocking is not a necessary step in jailbreaking.

Update #4: You can now jailbreak and update your i Phone 3GS, 3G to unlock i OS 4.2.1 on baseband with Red Sn0w 0.9.6b5. Step 1: Download i OS 4.2.1, 4.2 or 4.1 and Red Sn0w from the i Jailbreak Downloads Section.

Step 2: Upgrade/Restore to i OS 4.2.1 via i Tunes 10.1 (i Phone users: i OS 4.2.1 will update your baseband which is NOT unlockable right now).
